Today marks the 7th anniversary of that tragic day when terrorists rammed airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, killing thousands of innocent people. It was a day of great heroism as well as a day of infamy.
Infamy because Islamic terrorists finally accomplished one of their greatest goals: destroying the World Trade Center. They had tried before and failed. This time they succeeded in destroying the two main towers completely.
Great heroism because the first responders on the scene entered the still standing towers, standing at the very brink of Hell, knowing that they might not come out of this alive, but going in any way in order to save the lives of people in the towers; working hard and giving their all to get people out and to safety. Heroism as the passengers of United Flight 93 rose up to take back control of the aircraft that they were on from terrorists, preventing its use in yet another attack.
Thousands of people died that day: innocent victims and great heroes. They were fire fighters, police, rescue workers, and the average American. They were heroes, ordinary people doing extraordinary things under extraordinary circumstances with undaunted courage the likes of which is rarely seen.
Rest in peace, heroes of 9/11. You will never be forgotten.
